Choosing the Right Equipment for Youth Lacrosse

The sport of lacrosse is becoming more and more popular with each passing year in the United States. Children across the country are learning the concept of the game and having a great time playing the sport. As a result, there is an increasing number of youth lacrosse camps offered over the summer months for children to tweak their skills. With the long summer vacation coming up, parents and children are out looking for the best lacrosse equipment available. The search logically begins with the most fundamental piece of equipment for the game – the lacrosse stick.

The Stick

Truth be told, there really hasn’t been much development in the design of the lacrosse stick over the years other than some of the materials used. Most sticks were at one time made of wood, but in more recent years manufacturers have begun using lighter-weight plastics in order to improve functionality. However, the rules of the game are such that there really isn’t much room for change in the design of the stick. This is advantageous to parents who may be trying to stay within a budget because it means that less expensive used sticks are much the same in most respects as higher priced new sticks. Even at the youth level the lacrosse stick is considered an extension of the player who is using it and should be comfortable to play with.

If you are going to purchase a used stick keep in mind that it is not always a good idea to buy the cheapest stick you can find. It is better to get the best one that fits within your budget. They typically range from about $30 to $200 for high-end new sticks. Buying a used stick is particularly advisable if your child is new to the sport and isn’t sure he or she will end up playing beyond a year or two.

The Gloves

Lacrosse gloves can often present a particular challenge for parents especially if they are new to the sport. Some of the things to look for in lacrosse gloves as they pertain to youth include the material from which they are made, the amount of ventilation available in the glove, and overall comfort and protection. Most lacrosse gloves offer a protective piece called a wrist cuff, which helps keep the wrist from being injured. Ventilation is an often overlooked element, but sweat can adversely affect a player’s grip and stick control. Good ventilation is therefore critical in a pair of gloves. Gloves that feature mesh palms are ideal since they are arguably the most comfortable and offer excellent ventilation.

Remember, a lacrosse helmet is also required and can be found in the major sporting goods stores with all the other lacrosse gear. With the proper lacrosse equipment and fit, your child will be able to play the sport for years to come. Testimonial:

"I am not quite sure how the camp as a whole accomplished this, but Eric returned so much more mature and self-confident. He was respected by the counselors and in return respected everything they offered: both instructionally and emotionally. The staff seemed to have been able to reach him and get through to him, challenge him without discouraging him, and, all in all, make him feel like his dreams are attainable."
